Sister Cities Festival ::

Date: Friday July 07, 2017
Time: 10:00 AM

Get Ready, Set, Shop. . .
15th annual Sister Cities event promises variety, continue later hours

The Laredo International Sister Cities Festival (LISCF) readies for its 15th run and the event promises more variety of products and continued later shopping hours for opening day, Friday, July 7.

What started over a decade ago with 48 booths and barely covering half of the Civic Center Ballroom has blossomed to fill every inch of the Laredo Energy Arena now in its fifteenth year.  The free-admission event will again feature nearly 200 exhibit booth spaces and occupy the entire LEA from July 7- 9, 2017 and this year’s special guest of honor will be the State of Coahuila, MX.

In an effort to commemorate the second decade of the Festival and to highlight the participants that have made it a success over the last 14 years, the event has developed an award honoring its exhibitors.  This year, a recognition will be presented to the State of Coahuila and the artisans in attendance that represent wares and items authentic to that state.  The artisans from the region of Coahuila have a history of attending the event annually. This year, they will feature them at a special section on the main exhibit floor of the LEA, and in addition, they will also offer cultural performances highlighting this region of the country.  Last year, the City of Laredo recognized the State of Queretaro with the honor and in prior festivals Estado de Mexico, San Luis Potosi and Nuevo Leon received similar recognitions.

The Festival will feature an expanded line up of stage performances and sponsors. Falcon Bank, AT&T with a Wi-Fi Lounge, IBC, Luis Estrada- State Farm Insurance, Tequila Destinguido, TurisMed and Hospital Mexico Americano are all supporting the festival through their contributions as sponsors of the event.

Also on display this year, participants can expect performances from visiting dance groups from throughout Mexico to set the tone throughout the first and second day of the event. And to close out the three-day event, Sunday’s performances will include Laredo’s home-grown talent with some of the best groups and lively performers on stage throughout the afternoon.  Those currently scheduled to take the stage live are Elitekore Crew from Urban Street Dance Studio; Patsy Quintero and Elvis impersonator Luis Salazar.

The hours of operation are:
•    Friday, July 7: Opening Ceremony @ 10:00 a.m.; Expo: 11:00 – 8:00 p.m.
•    Saturday, July 8: Expo 10:00 a.m. – 7:00 p.m.
•    Sunday, July 9: Expo 10:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.

The event begins with a splendid bilingual opening ceremony and ribbon-cutting at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, July 7. The LEA is transformed over the three-day event to hold such exotic items as beautiful artisan produced and hand crafted wooden furniture, leather goods, jewelry, pottery and home goods and accessories, clothing for the whole family and food from across the Mexican republic.  Consumable products include spices, rubs, nopales, cheese, candy, honey, tortillas, tostadas, and salsas among those that can be eaten.  Health and beauty options include shampoos, conditioners, sprays, lotions and soaps, all hand crafted by artisans in small “talleres” or shops, many times made out of their homes or municipally sponsored creation spaces from their place of origin.  In years past these products have been brought in from and represent a myriad of regions in Mexico including the states of:  Aguascalientes; Guanajuato; Mexico City; San Luis Potosi; Coahuila; Estado de Mexico; Jalisco; Morelos; Nayarit; Nuevo Leon; Oaxaca; Puebla; and Queretaro.

“This event is such a big deal for our collective community.  I get real positive feedback about how Laredoans look forward to the event year after year, and have gotten similar feedback from visitors too.  Our exhibitors also tell us how much they enjoy being a part of the event.  I invite everyone back again, help us to maintain our attendance breaking record from last year with over 23,000 that came through the doors in the three days,” said Blasita J. Lopez, Laredo Convention and Visitors Bureau Director.

Migos

Migos are infused in the Southern tradition of hip-hop groups, having come together over their shared love of acts like the Hot Boys and OutKast. The trio formed in 2009 and include rappers Offset, Quavo, and Takeoff under the name Polo Club, which the name Migos became official in 2010.

After they released the mixtape, No Label, their featured regional hit "Bando," caught the attention of producer Zaytoven and Kevin Lee, also known as Coach K, the manager who launched the careers of Gucci Mane and Young Jeezy.

The following year in 2013, the group dropped its Young Rich N*ggas mixtape, which featured the instant hit "Versace." That same year, Migos performed at a popular Atlanta festival where they came across Drake. The rapper added a verse to the "Versace" remix and put the cut on his 2013 album, Nothing Was the Same.

The group’s next high-profile release was No Label II which featured the hit single "Fight Night". This was a mixtape distributed by major label Atlantic. In 2015, the label released the debut album Yung Rich Nation, which featured the single "One Time."

Later that year, Migos issued the mixtape Back to the Bando, which included their hit song "Look at My Dab." This hit secured a Hot 100 entry for the trio, which also kicked off the ‘dabbing’ trend, a viral dance phenomenon that became so popular by 2016. Athletes, musicians, and politicians were ‘dabbing’ to this trend.

As mixtapes continued to drop, Migos released the 3 Way EP in the summer of 2016. By the end of the year, their collaboration with Lil Uzi Vert to create "Bad & Boujee" climbed the top of the Billboard Hot 100. This hit was Migos’ first number one single in the US.

Their sophomore set, CULTURE was released in January of 2017, which debuted at number one on the Billboard 200. Recently, Migos was featured in Katy Perry’s new single “Bon Appétit” which was released on YouTube.

Yandel

Yandel is more than a reggaetón artist; he is a successful vocalist, composer, musician, producer and Puerto Rican video star. Reggaetón is now secure in its second decade as a musical genre and still successful in the world of entertainment.

Yandel adds distinct mixes of Hip Hop, R & B, and Pop to his rhythm. His influence served as a bridge that intertwined different genres for the mass audience.

Yandel's new and third solo production DANGEROUS hit the market under the Sony Music Latin label. This action packed album revolves around a different musical section of the contemporary pop market. Its themes continue to accumulate audiences

"Calentura Trap Edition" is a trap-remix with special guest Lil Jon from the original single "Calentura". Nominated for a Latin Grammy for Best Urban Performance, the video received more than 12 million views on Vevo for its sensual theme.

Don’t miss the Hot Summer Jam 2017 as the rising trio Migos and Reggaetón star Yandel bring more heat to the LEA Wednesday, July 19. For more information, call (956) 791-9192. Like us on Facebook, Follow us on Twitter or visit learena.com.

Food bank board members, STFB Executive Director Alma Boubel, and food bank staff members were among the media that attended the event.

The South Texas Food Bank’s Empty Bowls has aimed to both create awareness about the realities of hunger and to celebrate the generosity of those individuals, businesses and organizations that have impacted and furthered the food bank’s mission of feeding the hungry in South Texas.

“We wanted to change things up a bit for Empty Bowls XI,” STFB Empty Bowls Co-Chair Kevin Romo said. “Since its inception, we have featured “classic oldies” bands, but this year we thought it would be a good idea to try something different – a band that appeals to both young and old.”

He also noted that this year’s Empty Bowls will feature other fun surprises that event attendees will surely enjoy.

“Empty Bowls is a celebration of both generosity and of the dynamic spirit of our South Texas communities, this is why we believe that Los Lonely Boys are a perfect fit for this event,” concluded Romo.

“Empty Bowls is our largest fundraiser event of the year. Our non-profit organization depends highly on fundraising events to continue providing for our community. Thanks to the support that we received from all our donors and supporters, we were able to distribute over 10 million pounds of food throughout our eight county service area last fiscal year (2015-2016), “said South Texas Food Bank Board President Erasmo Villarreal.

“We are grateful to everyone who has helped us to make this event a success: from our supporters who buy tables, the fans that buy concert tickets, the businesses and wonderful artists that donate their talent to our auction; and volunteers,” Leslie Benavides, STFB Empty Bowls Co-Chair added.

The event includes: a dinner, a benefit concert and a silent auction featuring artworks from both local and regional artists.

About Los Lonely Boys
Hailing from San Angelo, Texas,  the Grammy Award winning band Los Lonely Boys are in the forefront of a music style they like to call "Texican Rock n' Roll" - a sound that combines elements of different music genres such as Texas blues, country, Tejano, and Latino and American rock ‘n’ roll.

The Texas trio consists of three brothers: Henry (guitar, vocals), Jojo (bass, vocals), and Ringo (drums, vocals) Garza. They are proud to note that they follow in the music tradition of their father, Ringo Garza, Sr., who formed the conjunto band, Los Falcones with his brothers. Los Falcones played conjunto music throughout south Texas during the 1970s and 1980s.

Their debut single, "Heaven", was a massive success; it reached #1 on the Billboard AC charts and propelled sales of the album. In 2005, the single was nominated for, and won, the Grammy Award for Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal. The second single, "More Than Love", was also nominated for a Grammy in the same category in 2006. The music and sound of Los Lonely Boys has become a staple of the Texas sound.

Los Lonely Boys have produced a total of eight studio albums -Revelation, being their latest release – plus several live recordings, holiday and compilations albums. The band has recorded and performed with music legends like Carlos Santana and Willie Nelson.

After a couple of personal setbacks, Los Lonely Boys are back on the road this year with their nationwide Revelation tour to the delight of the thousands of fans, who have been waiting to see them in concert.
